Quote :
The Prince is the name given to the protagonists from the Prince of Persia series of computer and video games. Throughout the games' history, names for the Prince are never explicitly stated; however, the Prince in the upcoming 2010 film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, is called Dastan.

Multiple Princes
Although the main character is always referred to as the Prince, there are actually multiple different Princes in the franchise, with only Dastan in the film having an explicitly defined named. The original Prince, designed by Jordan Mechner, appears in Prince of Persia, Shadow and the Flame, and Prince of Persia 3D. The remake of the original game, Prince of Persia Classic, tells the original story, but shows the Prince as the character in the Sands of Time trilogy. A second Prince appears in the second trilogy of games, which includes Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. When Jordan Mechner originally wrote the story for the first game in the second trilogy, it was suggested the game was a prequel to the original trilogy. After the release of Prince of Persia: Warrior Within the developers stated they intended the new series to be a separate entity, because its players would be unlikely to be familiar with the storyline from the original games.

A third Prince appears in the 2008 Prince of Persia. Ben Mattes, the game's producer said: "We never felt that it was the Prince of Persia. It's a Prince of Persia. There are many Princes of Persia within this fantasy universe that we call Prince of Persia". A fourth Prince appears in the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time film. This character is named Prince Dastan (Persian for "trickster"). He will be portrayed by actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

Possible clarification

According to a 2008 interview by IGN, Jordan Mechner intends to clarify the relationship between the different Princes in Prince of Persia: The Graphic Novel:

"So are all the princes of Persia from the various incarnations the same character or different men? That's the idea that Mechner wants to explore in the graphic novel. The comic is set in both the 9th century and 13th centuries with a storyline that interweaves past and future. There is more than one potential prince in each storyline but it involves many of the same things as the games did and has lots of roots in Persian myths and legends."

Early Prince of Persia games

In the early Prince of Persia games, the Prince is an adventurer from a foreign land. He has never experienced royalty, but wins the heart of the Sultan's daughter on a trip to Persia. Jaffar, an evil wizard who is plotting to conquer Persia by marrying the Princess, discovers this, and has the Prince thrown into the palace dungeons. The Prince, however, escapes from the dungeons, and ascends the palace. At one point, the Prince inadvertently creates a doppelganger of himself by jumping through a magical mirror. He and the Shadow become one again, though, later on. The Prince then ascends the rest of the palace, and defeats Jaffar, saving the Princess. When the Sultan returns from war, he finds out about the Prince saving his kingdom. The Sultan offers the Prince anything he desires as a reward. The Prince, however, requests only one thing; to marry the Princess. They get married and the Prince formally becomes the prince of Persia.

Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame begins as the Prince approaches the Princess one morning. An impostor posing as the Prince is already there, however, and orders the guards to arrest the Prince, who leaps through a window and escapes Persia on a merchant ship. While on the vessel, the Prince dreams of a mysterious woman who asks him to seek her. The impostor then destroys the ship with a conjured storm and, hours later, the Prince awakens on an island. The Prince makes his way back to Persia slowly, gathering many resources along the way. When he attempts to pick up a sword, the woman from his dream explains that this was once his father's kingdom, and the Prince was the only one who survived an onslaught. The Prince finds a blue flame in a temple, reading that whoever wants the flame must die. Although this sounds threatening, it is actually a clue as to how to obtain the flame. The Prince lets himself die in front of the flame, and although he appears to be dead, the Shadow from the previous game rises from his body, gains the flame, then re-enters the Prince's body. The Prince then returns to Persia and vanquishes Jaffar with the flame.

In Prince of Persia 3D, the Sultan's younger brother, Assan, ambushes the Prince and Sultan at a party. The Prince is once again thrown into the dungeons, but he escapes. He then witnesses the Sultan's demise at the hands of Assan, and realizes that the true motives behind this betrayal have to do with a vow the Sultan made; that the Princess would marry Assan's son, Rugnor, when she became twenty-one. The Prince pursues, and eventually defeats, Rugnor, saving the Princess. The Prince and Princess kiss, and are last seen traveling together to an unknown location.

The Sands of Time trilogy

The Prince, as seen in The Sands of Time. The Prince in the Sands of Time trilogy is a different person than the Prince depicted in the original three games. This Prince is royalty who seeks to impress his father and earn honor and glory. During the course of the trilogy, the Prince's values and goals change vastly. During the beginning events of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the Prince collects an artifact called the Dagger of Time, but has no idea that it allows him to manipulate time. He is soon goaded into using the Dagger of Time to unlock the Hourglass of Time, which house the Sands of Time. The Sands of Time ravage Azad, which confuses the Prince. He expresses reluctance to act, because he is unsure what the best actions are. Soon enough, though, he is convinced by Farah that the best course of action is to lock the Sands of Time back into the Hourglass of Time. As the Prince and Farah travel together, they begin to trust each other more. When the Prince is about to lock the Sands of Time back up, though, he hesitates at Farah's advice, causing them a detour. Farah then steals the Dagger of Time while the Prince is asleep, and he pursues her, but she dies. Driven by grief at her death, the Prince finally locks the Sands of Time back into the Hourglass of Time. This brings him back to the war camp as his army is about to invade the Maharajah's palace. He detaches himself from the unit, finding Farah's room, and giving her the Dagger of Time. The Vizier appears then, but the Prince kills him.

Seven years after the events of the previous game, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within begins as the player learns that the Prince has been pursued by an unstoppable creature called the Dahaka during this seven year period. This has driven him into a state of constant paranoia, and he will do anything to save himself from his fate. The Prince seeks counsel from an old wise man, who tells the Prince about the Island of Time; where the Sands of Time were created. The Prince believes that, because the Dahaka only pursues the Prince due to the existence of the Sands of Time, if the Prince travels back through time and prevents the Sands of Time from being created, the Dahaka will cease to exist. The Prince sails to the Island of Time, and travels backwards in time using a portal he finds there while pursuing a woman in black. He witnesses this woman trying to kill another woman, whom he learns is named Kaileena. He saves Kaileena from the woman in black, but is denied an audience with the Empress of Time, the creator of the Sands of Time. Kaileena tells him that in order to open the door to the throne room where the Empress of Time is, he must activate two towers. He does so, and soon learns that Kaileena is, in fact, the Empress of Time herself. He kills her, and then travels back to the present, believing he had prevented the creation of the Sands of Time. He is proven wrong, though, when the Dahaka attempts again to kill him. He soon collects that when the Empress of Time dies, the Sands of Time are created; thus, in killing Kaileena, the Prince himself created the Sands of Time. The Prince learns of a mask that allows the wearer to coexist with himself in the same time line. He finds and dons it, then eliminates his other self, taking his place in the time line. He believes that if he brings Kaileena into the present, and kills her there, rather than the past, the Sands of Time will be created, but the Maharajah will fail to find them, and the Prince would never release them in Azad. The Prince executes his plan, but learns that the Dahaka is still in existence. He figures out, though, that it is after Kaileena, not the Prince. He and Kaileena together kill the Dahaka, then sail to Babylon, where a siege is happening.

As the Prince and Kaileena approach Babylon, their vessel is ambushed, and they float into the harbor of Babylon, separated. Kaileena is taken by masked guards, whom the Prince pursues. He soon learns that the man behind the siege is the Vizier, whom he failed to kill in Azad, due to the Sands of Time never existing before. The Maharajah still searched the Island of Time, and still found the artifacts, this time without the Sands of Time. The Vizier kills Kaileena, releasing the Sands of Time once again, which infect the Prince. He then impales himself with the Dagger of Time, which grants him immortality. The Prince escapes with the Dagger of Time, but soon learns that the infection of the Sands of Time has had an adverse effect on his mind. He is now haunted by a disembodied voice, who claims to be a part of him; the stronger half. This disembodied voice often encourages the Prince to do wrong, and sometimes manifests itself physically, altering the Prince's appearance. As the Prince makes his way back to the central part of Babylon to kill the Vizier, he encounters Farah once again. She does not remember him, as the Prince reversed every moment they spent together. The Prince and Farah travel together, and she starts to have a stronger influence than this disembodied voice. He begins to bicker with the voice, who tries to alter his motives. Ultimately, he becomes independent of the voice, but is forced to struggle with it when he is cast into a dried well. The Prince soon finds the body of his deceased father, whom he had hoped to reconcile with, and soon realizes that his only mistakes was in not accepting his past mistakes and moving on. This revelation makes the voice disappear completely, and the Prince makes his way back to the Vizier, and kills him. The voice then vies again for control of the Prince's body, but the Prince soon realizes that fighting it only intensifies everything that fuels it, making it stronger, and so decides simply to turn away from it, starving it of aggression. The Prince re-awakens then in Farah's embrace.

Prince of Persia (2008 video game)
Main article: Prince of Persia (2008 video game)

The Prince, as he appears in the 2008 Prince of Persia video game. The Prince (voiced by Nolan North) from the 2008 video game Prince of Persia is a new character, different from the protagonist of the Sands of Time trilogy. Producer Ben Mattes explained that their goal was to create an accessible action hero. He elaborated, "With Prince of Persia we tried to create more nuanced, layered characters. So our inspiration was anything Harrison Ford has ever done: Indiana Jones, Han Solo. The character Dark Cloud from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon--again, he's kind of rough and tumble, but he's got a soft heart."

The character is illustrated as a normal person, not a noble prince. He is an extremely agile and cunning warrior, proving to be an able swordsman. He wears a red and blue scarf, which he says is "lucky", with ragged cape, a brown vest and pants, and sandals. He wields a longsword in his right hand and wears a spiked gauntlet on his left hand. The gauntlet is the Prince's secondary weapon, and is also a tool that allows him to perform feats such as sliding down from high places without being harmed. He believes people cannot be trusted and that living in the past is ignorant. His "live for today" attitude allows him to perform death-defying stunts without fear.

Through dialogue with Elika, the Prince reveals that when he was a child, his parents went to the aid of another kingdom, leaving him in the care of relatives. They promised that they would retrieve him one day, but never did, and he presumes they died. He describes their act as "fighting someone else's battle", which he thinks is a waste of time.

The Characterization of the Prince

The Sands of Time Trilogy
The Prince's manner and outlook change over the course of the trilogy: becoming grittier and more adult as the Prince matures. He hungers, at first, for glory and honor in his father's eyes, and when he discovers he actually has a distaste for bloody combat (although he can, and will, engage in it when he must), his resolution to gain it by being the first to the Maharaja's Treasure Vault, and subsequently claiming the Dagger of Time, is what set in motion the entire sequence of events over the three games. He attempts, tirelessly, to undo the mistakes he's made via time-travel, rather than live in the present with the consequences of those actions, and his attempts to set things right often make them worse.

The Prince is arrogant, posh, and a bit impulsive, spending a large portion of his story verbally swashbuckling with Farah. His tendency to become blind to all except achieving his immediate goal is the cause of many of his missteps. Nevertheless, he's a kind-hearted soul who genuinely wants to be noble and good. In The Warrior Within, The Prince appears as a much more hardened and dark figure than he had done in the predeccessor, probably due to his constant struggles throughout the time between games to elude the relentless Dahaka.

The Prince is also claustrophobic. When down in the tombs with Farah, she asks him why he's breathing so hard, and he admits he doesn't "like tight spaces."

Some of the Dark Prince's control over the body can be attributed to this fear. The Prince while on roof tops feels totally in control, but when forced into the streets and alley ways he becomes more nervous and edgy.

Sand Wraith
The Sandwraith appears in Warrior Within as a male, humanoid creature in some state of decay. It is wrapped in shreds of fabric that swirl in a supernatural wind, and its eyes glow a bright blue. The Prince sees it just as he enters the primary complex of the Fortress of Time, and for the first two-thirds of the game its nature is cloaked in shadow and mystery. It even appears to be hostile to the Prince, because it throws an axe at him, which he only narrowly avoids. It is later revealed that it did this to kill an enemy getting closer to the unaware Prince from behind. Just prior to his confrontation with the Empress of Time, the Prince witnesses the apparent demise of the Wraith at the hands, or rather, tentacles, of the Dahaka, which then curiously proceeds to ignore the Prince entirely.

Following his first and failed attempt to prevent the creation of the Sands of Time in the past, the Prince finds himself again on the run from the Dahaka in the present. Evading the creature, the despondent prince finds himself in a vast crypt. Wrought with the cruel irony of his situation, he brushes his hand over a wall covered with ancient markings. Perhaps reacting to his touch or simply coming to his attention (the cut scene doesn't make the cause clear), the markings tell a story of a member of the Maharajah's army in his raid for the Sands. While the raid appears to succeed, the man himself dies, but through an artifact called the Mask of the Wraith rewrote his Fate and escaped death. The game's manual makes reference to the Maharaja himself using the Mask to retrieve the sands, and is depicted in the ancient markings found in the crypt. A possible error to this tale is the fact that even though the man found death, he was still somehow able to find and use the mask and change his fate.

The Prince then hunts down the Mask and puts it on, becoming the Sandwraith, a creature not only able to shift time, but to take up another space in the Timeline, separate from the Prince. Thus the Wraith sets out to stop his past self from killing Kaileena. When he reaches the Prince at last, it is at the point where the Wraith was originally killed by the Dahaka. This time, he lets the Prince die, and the Dahaka, apparently satisfied, leaves. The Mask then loosens and the Prince returns to normal and continues his journey to change the expected events in the battle against the Empress of Time. It is possible that the Maharaja watched the Sandwraith die, then allowed his past self to perish in order to complete his quest.

Powers/Abilities
While wearing the Mask of the Wraith, the Prince retains his personality, memories and his fighting skills, including his mastery of various weapons. This suggests that although the Mask has deformed his physical appearance, it is not possessed by another conscious being. As the sandwraith, the Prince can manipulate time without limit, as his sand tanks fill themselves up automatically. However, the Mask depletes the Prince's lifebar even when not struck or hurt in any way, however it will not kill him but reduce the lifebar to 25%. This implies that the Mask actually drains the essence of the person who wears it and transforms it into the Sands of Time, though this has never been confirmed

Dark Prince

The Dark Prince appears as a main character and antagonist in The Two Thrones. Not far into the story, the Prince becomes tainted by the newly unleashed Sands of Time, awakening in him a different entity, the Dark Prince, who can be assumed to be the tainted "soul" of the Prince in "Warrior Within". He embodies every negative aspect of the Prince; he's violent, selfish, and arrogant. He also shares all the fighting skills as the normal Prince (e.g. mastery of the sword, axe and more), and even shows newer skills that the Prince has not demonstrated previously. The Dark Prince is voiced by Rick Miller.

Early in the game, the Prince chases Kaileena's kidnappers into the palace, only to be stopped by one of the Vizier's Generals, with the Daggertail (a chain blade weapon) embedded deep into his left arm. The Prince is then forced to watch the Vizier slay Kaileena, releasing the Sands of Time again. As the Prince lacked any protection this time (he had thrown away the Medallion, and the Vizier was in the possession of the Dagger), he was infected by the Sands as well, albeit at a much slower rate than anyone else. However, he was able to grab the dagger before the sands caused him to mutate completely; instead, his left arm gained a glowing, golden spiral design, along with the Daggertail fused and melted into his arm. As time passes, the Prince hears a voice within his head (the Dark Prince), giving him advice and urging him along. The extent of the sands' taint eventually starts to grow as the game progresses, covering the Prince's entire left arm and part of his back. The exact reason for his mutation being resisted in the first place is ambiguous; the Dark Prince tells him later that he may have grown a resistance to the sands: perhaps from extended use of the sands or perhaps from the nights he spent with Kaileena. Eventually, he begins sporadically transforming into the Dark Prince, whose unique skills (including his apparent mastery of the Daggertail) allow the Prince to continue in his quest. Upon touching water, the Prince reverts to his normal form. At first the Prince accepts the voice's help without question, but with his increasing interaction with Princess Farah, it leads him to question his other side. Eventually, he realises that the Dark Prince is only looking out for his own selfish avarice, and that vengeance, conquest, and subjugation, rather than constructive goals, are topping his to-do list. The Prince rejects this malevolent presence and finishes his journey without the Dark Prince's help.

However, after slaying the Vizier and apparently losing the Sands' taint, the Prince encounters the Dark Prince once more, who pulls him into a strange dream-like realm. The Prince chases his dark counterpart down as the shifting landscape changes (shifting to various locations from the past games, such as the magic fountain room from Sands of Time and the ship from Warrior Within). As the Prince chases him, the Dark Prince reveals indirectly that he is all of the Prince's darker elements brought to separate life by the Sands when he resisted direct infection, but that everything that the Dark Prince is was already a part of the Prince before the change--in effect, the prince had two souls inhabiting his body. The Dark Prince intends on distracting the Prince in this world, but he is thwarted again by Farah, who urges the Prince to let go of his hatred and turn away. The Prince ascends a staircase leading into a bright light and the Dark Prince is left behind once and for all, forever alone, afraid, and shouting into oblivion, as the Prince awakens.

The Dark Prince made his first appearance in the true ending of Warrior Within which echoes his appearance after the Vizier is killed. He is shown hooded, he picks up the crown and gives his exact line from The Two Thrones: "All that is yours is rightfully mine, and mine it will be!" However, in the ending of The Two Thrones the Dark Prince's hood flies off by the time he says: "...and mine it will be!" which does not happen in Warrior Within so as to protect his identity for the future game, in which his face is revealed.
